Cadillac Adopts Nasa Strategy to Build Unit from the Ground Up for Melbourne Startline.

A little more than twelve months in the past at the Nevada Grand Prix, Cadillac were ultimately granted the green light as the world of Formula One's newest entrant for the 2026 season. Building the team from the ground up has required a hectic pace of work that the principal, Graeme Lowdon, has likened to the Apollo moon landing. As F1 descends on the Vegas strip this weekend, Cadillac understand the deadline is approaching.

The Tight Timeline to Melbourne

At the final race of the championship to be staged in the America, with just over a hundred days to go before they hit the circuit for the maiden outing in Australia at the 2026 opener, the Cadillac F1 project have advanced rapidly but, in what must seem like a monumental endeavor, they are aware there will never be adequate time.

The chief technical officer, Nick Chester, came aboard the embryonic team in the spring of 2023 shortly after it was formed, when the organization were without even an official entry. He has been at its center since then and gets a knowing grin when reflecting on the journey.

“You might get five minutes reflecting at what you have accomplished and go: ‘Amazing, what an achievement what the team has created in a short three-year period,’” he notes. “And then the next minute you consider: ‘Yes, we still have a great deal to do.’”

A Unique Task

Nick Chester had success at Renault in Fernando Alonso’s championship-winning seasons of 2005/2006 and was in control of technical development at the then-new Mercedes-Benz Formula E team, but no previous experience has quite compared with the mission of introducing the all-American Cadillac marque, a works entry supported by the corporate entity, General Motors Corporation, into F1.

“Building an grand prix team from scratch, when will you ever have the possibility to do that?” Chester remarks. “It's unparalleled. In an well-set team you don’t get the possibility to change cultural approach.”

With every day that passes focus are increasingly concentrated on the approaching critical moment in the Australian GP and targets are being set realistically.

“You have to assume that a brand-new squad joining the grid is likely to start at the back but simply getting on to the grid will be an achievement in itself,” Lowdon stated this year and while the CTO shared this view he believed the squad had a point to prove as well.
“Our primary goal we aim to demonstrate is that we should be there,” he says. “So we show up and we perform competently. We aim to demonstrate that this is a professional operation performing the proper actions on the race track. When we have demonstrated that we are a legitimate team, then we want to show forward movement after that.”

Driver Lineup and Team Building Drive

In the summer they signed Sergio Perez and Valtteri as their drivers for the 2026 season, a duo remarkable for their vast knowledge in performing at the front in two top-tier teams, Red Bull and Mercedes-AMG, and Valtteri Bottas echoed the mood of fighting spirit.

“Of course, we’re realistic,” Bottas stated. “We face a massive task to do, and we expect probably a tough opening, because it's the top level of motorsport. But we’re not there to stay at the back. In my view with this structure, with these individuals, these people, it's entirely possible we can't manage to advance swiftly to the front and enjoy some success.”

To realize that ambition hiring has been in full swing, with employees now up to over 400 and intended to attain the goal of 600 members swiftly. In addition to their present headquarters at the Silverstone circuit, the organization are in the phase of finishing an main base at the Fishers location in Indianapolis and there is the GM plant in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are constructing the center to build the new engine, planned for the 2029 season – until then they will run Ferrari engines – and the aerodynamic facility in Cologne. It is a complex structure, contrary to the movement in the sport for increased consolidation, and has led to the innovative team culture to which the CTO referred to.

NASA Model

“We've drawn heavily from the NASA moon mission,” said the team principal just before the Silverstone race in mid-season. “We are pragmatic, we recognize how challenging it is. The deadlines, they’re super, super, super short. OK, it's not a space expedition, but the pressure is comparable.”

So they have implemented, rather than the traditional management structure, a flat management structure akin to that of the space agency's, where there were a range of specialist groups all tackling different aspects of the mission at a multiple sites.

“If you have to go through a process where someone has a problem and they report it to their team leader, that leader communicates with a leader at a different location, it goes back down the chain, it’s super slow,” explains Chester. “Therefore we enable team members to really get on with it. Avoiding management approval for each action is so much cleaner and faster.”

Upcoming Challenges

The success of this agile strategy will be evaluated in the heat of competition next season and there is no little amount riding on this for F1, too. Cadillac have signed as their reserve driver the emerging American Colton Herta
