The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup match against Newcastle.
